In this category of servers the main priority is low cost,
with reliability as a close second consideration. Price has always been
the number one concern of most Malaysian buyers.
While
performance is important, we do not consider it a vital part of
building a budget server; it is merely something that is considered when
price and reliability have been established. This is not to say that
performance is ignored because an efficient server will mean better
productivity for the users depending on the server. Platform stability
is also a priority and in this respect, many of our clients have always
settled for servers based on the Intel®
IA-32 architecture. Although AMD's OpteronTM
is a strong contender, the lack of a 64-bit version of Windows Server
2003 is somewhat hampering its acceptance in small business
environments.
The server we
recommend below would be suitable for up to 20-25 users as a general
rule of thumb. However, every company have their own requirements and
depending on needs, the number of users connected to the server may be
more or less than the above specified numbers.

Intel® Entry Server Board SE7210TP1-E CPU:
Intel®
Pentium® 4 3.2E GHz processor
Approximate Retail Price: RM 1,845

The Intel® Entry Server
Board SE7210TP1-E delivers essential features and enhanced I/O
bandwidth for entry-level server applications. This is an up to
date mainboard that leverages on the desktop Intel® Pentium® 4 processor's
800 MHz processor side bus and
Hyper-Threading Technology. You can start off with serial
ATA-150 RAID hard drives initially and add a SCSI adaptor and
hard discs later, as your business grows and demand more
throughput. Dual Intel® PRO
1000 and Intel® PRO 100
ethernet chips provide the network bandwidth for your growing
business. This is the ideal server platform for a small startup
business. |
The
Intel®
Pentium® 4 processor is the latest generation of Intel
processors designed to deliver advanced performance for emerging
web and PC technologies. Based on Intel® NetBurst™
Microarchitecture, the
Pentium® 4 processor provides superior
performance for users who demand the latest technology.
For an entry level server, we recommend the 3.2E GHz 0.09 micron
"Prescott" core CPU with 1 MB L2 cache. This will ensure that
the server runs efficiently at all the times. |
Graphics & Memory
Onboard
Graphics: ATI RAGE™ XL
SVGA PCI
video controller with 8 MB RAM
Memory: 2 X 256 MB
(total 512 MB) Kingston
400MHz DDR PC3200 ECC DIMM 3-3-3
Approximate Retail Price: RM 625
|
|
On a server mainboard, video graphics requirements are quite
basic because they are only needed to power a monitor when the
server is under maintenance or configuration by technical
personnel. The ATI RAGE™ XL is designed to deliver quality
2D/3D/video acceleration. It addresses fundamental graphics
display requirements of a server mainboard. |
The Kingston Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory module is rated at CAS
3 and is on par with
other PC3200 modules from the likes of Apacer, etc. 512 MB of
memory should be more than enough for entry level
server applications unless you run other
applications that require significant main memory capacity.
Using PC3200 memory also ensures easy CPU upgrade in future. |
